At Renaissance Behavioral Medicine, we specialize in providing comprehensive care for individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Led by Dr. Etefia, our team is committed to offering evidence-based therapies to help patients manage their symptoms and thrive.
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a brain based condition that impacts memory, focus, planning, learning, and impulse control. Decades of scientific research support medication-based treatment as the most effective approach for managing this condition.
However, many individuals may not be good candidates for medication-based therapy due to co-occurring medical conditions, a history of drug side-effects, and philosophical objections to drug use. TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a novel, non-invasive treatment for ADHD that involves use of magnetic pulses to enhance brain activity in regions that are typically underactive in ADHD. Studies in children, adolescents, and adults have found TMS to be effective for the inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms of ADHD. Our practice utilizes a technique that may yield control of ADHD in as few as 15 30-minute sessions (about 3 weeks).
While ADHD can present significant challenges, it is not considered a disability in the traditional sense. However, individuals with ADHD may be eligible for accommodations in educational or workplace settings to help them manage their symptoms and succeed.
Common symptoms of ADHD in children may include:
Inattention: Difficulty staying focused on tasks, making careless mistakes, and being easily distracted.
Hyperactivity: Restlessness, fidgeting, excessive talking, and difficulty staying seated.
Impulsivity: Acting without thinking, interrupting others, and difficulty waiting their turn.
Adults with ADHD may experience similar symptoms, which can manifest differently in different life stages. Common symptoms include:
Inattention: Forgetfulness, disorganization, difficulty completing tasks, and trouble with time management.
Impulsivity: Impulsive decision-making, difficulty controlling emotions, and speaking without considering consequences.
Hyperactivity: Inner restlessness, difficulty relaxing, and a constant need for stimulation.
ADHD is typically categorized into three subtypes based on the predominant symptoms:
Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: Difficulty paying attention and staying focused without significant hyperactivity or impulsivity.
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: Hyperactivity and impulsivity without significant inattention.
Combined Presentation: Symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity are present.
Diagnosing ADHD involves a comprehensive evaluation, including:
Clinical Assessment: A thorough review of symptoms, medical history, and developmental milestones.
Behavioral Observations: Assessing behavior in different settings, such as home, school, and social situations.
Psychological Testing: Standardized tests may be used to assess cognitive functioning, attention, and behavior.
Collateral Information: Input from parents, teachers, and other caregivers is essential for understanding the full scope of symptoms.
